The Nursery Day

Children can attend The Owlets Nursery for a variety of sessions over the week using the free EYFE 15 hour entitlement and adding additional sessions.

The morning begins with a free flow experience. The children engage in self chosen and carefully thought out activities and games to support them to settle into the day. Once all the children have arrived we have a group time, answer the register and count how many children are present using the number line, before finding out about the days learning .

During the course of the morning the children participate in activities to extend their knowledge and interests such as matching up numbers, identifying shapes, learning phonic sounds and exploring a variety of creative resources.

The children also have access to the outside space which is organised to enhance learning opportunities e.g. with a builders workshop, a restaurant role play, sand, water and plenty of other large and small scale equipment such as trikes, scooters, a climbing frame and space to play running games.

A healthy fruit snack is provided by our on-site kitchen and children enjoy sitting together while staff promote discussion about their day and experiences.

The activities continue over the day with visits to the school library, specialist teaching in the form of music and French lessons and enjoying fun music and movement sessions.

There is an option to stay for a healthy, cooked lunch or to stay until the end of the school day.

A quiet time is encouraged after lunch for children to rest and recharge during their busy day and then they continue their learning and development during the afternoon session.

As children prepare to transition to Reception they benefit from weekly visits to the reception class during the summer term. They are invited to explore the space and resources to support their move to a new environment. The school also invites parents to visit the classroom and outdoor space and attend a meeting to let families know about key pointers for the transition from Nursery to school. The Owlets staff share books about starting school and facilitate discussion about this new adventure for example by setting up a role play school with uniform to try on.
